Two years, two months, and two days alone in a cabin Thoreau built himself. The question he was testing: what do you actually need? The experiment was partly a stunt, but the thinking is serious. The chapter "Economy" alone is worth the whole book — a sustained argument against the assumption that busyness is the same as purpose.
